Tokyo to Complete Ring Road No. 2 in FY 2022
June 7, 2018
Tokyo- The Tokyo metropolitan government plans to complete Ring Road No. 2, which connects the Japanese capital's central and southeastern waterfront areas, in fiscal 2022, two years behind schedule, officials said Thursday.
The metropolitan government previously planned to complete the road in time for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games, but pushed back the goal due to a delay in the relocation of the Tsukiji wholesale food market in Chuo Ward.
Ring Road No. 2 is a key route to link the planned athletes' village for the 2020 Games in Chuo Ward's Harumi district with the new National Stadium now under construction in Shinjuku Ward.
A section extending some 3.4 kilometers between Koto Ward's Toyosu district and Minato Ward's Shinbashi district has yet to be opened.
The metropolitan government had planned to build a tunnel under the site of the Tsukiji market in time for the 2020 Games. But the plan was changed following Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike's decision to postpone the market relocation to Toyosu.
A provisional bypass road running on the outer edge of the market and elsewhere is expected to be constructed within a month of the market's relocation, currently set for October this year.
For the 2020 Games, a provisional road is planned to be built on the site of the Tsukiji market by the end of fiscal 2019. Jiji Press
