January 6, 2018
Nagoya- Toyota Motor Corp. said Friday it will showcase a next-generation automated driving research vehicle at the Consumer Electronics Show set to open in Las Vegas on Tuesday.
The Japanese automaker said the research vehicle has a significantly improved recognition capability for its surroundings, equipped with a high-performance sensor system that can monitor 360 degrees around the car with a 200-meter range. Previously, only the forward direction was tracked.
Shorter-range sensors are also installed to detect low-level and smaller objects near the vehicle including children and debris on the road, Toyota said.
The Toyota Research Institute, a US unit engaged in developing artificial intelligence technology, developed the research vehicle, based on the Lexus LS 600hL sedan.
Toyota aims to enable autonomous driving on expressways in 2020 and on all public roads in the early 2020s. Jiji Press
