Trump muses about ending Japan-U.S. Security Pact: Report

June 25, 2019

Washington--U.S. President Donald Trump, in a recent private conversation, touched on the possibility of ending the longstanding Japan-U.S. security treaty, Bloomberg reported Monday.

Trump regards the accord, first signed more than 60 years ago, as too one-sided because it promises U.S. aid if Japan is ever attacked but does not oblige Japan's military to come to the United States' defense, the U.S. news agency quoted three people familiar with the matter as saying.

With the president not having taken any steps toward pulling out of the treaty, however, administration officials said such a move is highly unlikely, according to the Bloomberg report. Jiji Press
