Trump Reiterates Dissatisfaction with Trade with Japan

November 8, 2018

Washington--U.S. President Donald Trump again voiced on Wednesday dissatisfaction with his country's trade deficit with Japan, signaling a hard-line attitude toward Tokyo in upcoming bilateral talks.

"We have close to 100 billion dollars (in) trade deficit with Japan. And Japan has treated us very unfairly," Trump said at a press conference at the White House.

"They send in millions of cars at a very low tax. They don't take our cars, and if they do they have a massive tax" on the cars, he complained.

"I'm not blaming Japan, I'm blaming the people that were in charge of the United States for allowing that to happen," Trump said.

The comments signaled that Trump will not soften his stance on trade with Japan after the Republicans lost their majority in the House in Tuesday's midterm elections.

Japan and the United States are set to launch talks on a proposed bilateral trade agreement on goods, or TAG, as early as January next year. Jiji Press
