U.K. Media Report about Japan Assemblywoman Thrown Out of Meeting

London- British media on Monday reported about a Japanese politician who was ordered to leave a meeting of a southwestern Japan municipal assembly for speaking at the podium with a cough drop in her mouth.

The incident "casts a sharp spotlight on a society which is strictly bound by seemingly inflexible etiquette, rules and hierarchy," The Daily Telegraph said in its digital edition.

Yuka Ogata, a member of the Kumamoto city assembly, was kicked out of the assembly session Friday. British media also reported about her when she was forced to leave an assembly session in November last year after bringing her baby.

"Japan famously lags far behind other industrialized nations in terms of gender equality in the workplace, despite Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's high-profile push for 'womenomics'," The Daily Telegraph said.

The Guardian reported in its digital edition that "many parents in Japan, particularly women, face trying to juggle work with raising children amid a shortage of nursery places." Jiji Press
