U.N. Panel Resolution Condemns N. Korea’s Human Rights Abuse
November 16, 2018
New York--A U.N. panel adopted by consensus on Thursday a Japan- and European Union-drafted resolution condemning North Korean's human rights abuse including the issue of abductions of Japanese nationals.
The U.N. General Assembly Third Committee adopted such a resolution for the 14th consecutive year.
This year's resolution noted "the long years of suffering experienced by abductees and their families," calling for an early settlement of the issue.
Prior to the adoption, Kim Song, North Korea's ambassador to the United Nations, said, "The draft resolution has nothing to do with genuine human rights, as it is a product of political plot of hostile forces that try to disgrace the image" of North Korea.
"My delegation totally rejects the draft resolution," he also said.
Some countries, including China and Russia, declined to support the resolution.
The resolution also noted "the urgency and importance of the issue of international abductions and of the immediate return of all abductees." It also encouraged the Office of the U.N.
High Commissioner for Human Rights to expedite the process for strengthening the capacity of the office.
The resolution is expected to be adopted at a plenary session of the General Assembly by the end of this year. Jiji Press
