U.N. Security Council to hold ministerial meeting Thursday
September 17, 2017
NEW YORK- The U.N. Security Council plans to hold a ministerial meeting on Thursday to address issues related to North Korea, which has pushed ahead with provocative acts, a diplomatic source said Saturday.
The meeting will be held at the request of the United States when leaders and cabinet ministers from many countries gather in New York for the U.N. General Assembly session, according to the source.
Ministers from Security Council member countries will discuss ways to ensure the full implementation of resolutions on North Korea the panel has adopted.
Following North Korea's sixth nuclear test, carried out on Sept. 3, the Security Council adopted on Monday a resolution imposing sanctions on the reclusive state, the ninth of its kind.
The latest resolution set limits on crude oil and petroleum product shipments to North Korea and placed a blanket ban on North Korean textile exports.
Previous resolutions put other major export items of the country, including coal, iron ore and seafood, on the embargo list.
The United States estimates that North Korea's export revenue will be reduced by 90 pct if all of the Security Council resolutions are enforced strictly, the source said.
It has urged U.N. member states to implement the resolutions steadily in order to make them workable and force North Korea to reverse its policies. Jiji Press
