UNSC to meet on another N. Korea missile launch over Japan
September 15, 2017
NEW YORK- The UN Security Council will hold an emergency meeting on Friday afternoon after North Korea fired another ballistic missile over the northernmost Japan prefecture of Hokkaido on the same day.
Japan, the United States and South Korea requested Ethiopia, this month's president of the most powerful UN body, to convene the meeting.
At the emergency meeting to be held behind closed doors, Japan, which is taking the situation seriously, is expected to demand that each UN member country strictly implement the Security Council's sanctions resolutions against North Korea in order to increase pressure on the reclusive state.
Earlier this week, the council unanimously adopted a new resolution to impose tougher sanctions against North Korea in response to its sixth nuclear test, carried out on Sept. 3, placing limits on exports of crude oil and refined petroleum products to Pyongyang and completely banning the shipments of North Korean textile products.
