US court cancels Toshiba’s halt of info sharing with Western Digital

SILICON VALLEY- A California superior court has issued a provisional injunction against Toshiba Corp.'s suspension of information sharing with Western Digital Corp., a joint venture partner of the struggling Japanese company, the US hard disk drive maker said Tuesday.
The court will hold a hearing on July 28 to review the temporary injunction.
Toshiba late last month unilaterally halted its information sharing with Western Digital, claiming that the US partner is trying to block its planned sale of subsidiary Toshiba Memory Corp.
The US court, however, ordered the Japanese electronics and machinery maker to provide sufficient grounds for the ban on Western Digital's access to the joint venture's factory and information system.
Western Digital said in a statement that the court decision upholds the validity of its position.
In a separate statement, Toshiba called the court order unacceptable and expressed its readiness to file an appeal against it.
But Toshiba indicated its view that the US court accepted part of its claim, noting that it denied a need for the company to give Western Digital access to Toshiba group information stored in a certain database.
On Friday, the same court is slated to hold a hearing over Western Digital's claim for an injunction against the planned sale of Toshiba Memory.
Toshiba plans to sell the unit in order to generate funds for wiping out its negative net worth caused by huge losses from its US nuclear business. (Jiji Press)
