US media calls into question Trump’s remarks on Abe’s wife English skills
July 21, 2017
WASHINGTON- US media called into question on Thursday the credibility of the remarks US President Donald Trump made in an interview with The New York Times about the English language skills of Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's wife, Akie.
In the interview, published on Wednesday, Trump said Akie does not speak English, claiming that she cannot even say, "Hello."
The comment came when he talked about a dinner at a Group of 20 summit in Germany earlier this month.
"I was seated next to the wife of Prime Minister Abe, who I think is a terrific guy, and she's a terrific woman, but doesn't speak English," Trump told the paper.
When he was asked, "Like, nothing, right? Like zero?" Trump said, "Like, not 'hello.'"
"There was one interpreter for Japanese, 'cause otherwise it would have been even tougher," Trump said. "But I enjoyed the evening with her, and she's really a lovely woman." (Jiji Press)
