Brazilians Protest Dolphin Hunting in Japan
September 3, 2018
Sao Paulo- Some 25 citizens in Sao Paulo, Brazil, staged a protest on Saturday against dolphin hunting in western Japan.
In front of the Japanese consulate-general and other locations, the protestors demanded an end to the dolphin hunting, carrying placards with slogans such as "Stop" and "Shame." In the town of Taiji, Wakayama Prefecture, the season for dolphin drive hunting started the same day.
The leader of the group accused Taiji fishermen for using a cruel hunting method. The fishermen claim that dolphin hunting is part of Japan's tradition and culture, but their ships and fishing equipment have advanced beyond comparison with old days and the current way of hunting is not traditional, the leader said.
A general meeting of the International Whaling Commission is scheduled to be held in Florianopolis, southern Brazil, for five days from Sept. 10.
The Japanese government is proposing to bring up a resumption of commercial whaling for discussions at the meeting. Antiwhaling groups are expected to step up protests during the meeting period. Jiji Press
