ISHINOMAKI, MIYAGI PREF.- An art, music and food festival kicked off in Ishinomaki, Miyagi Prefecture, on Saturday to help revitalize the Tohoku northeastern Japan region hit by the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami.
In the event, "Reborn-Art Festival," which will run through Sept. 10, contemporary art works are on display and concerts are scheduled. The organizing body expects a total of 200,000 visitors.
Noted music producer Takeshi Kobayashi and Ishinomaki Mayor Hiroshi Kameyama serve as top executives of the festival.
"I want a lot of people to feel how postdisaster reconstruction has progressed and how Ishinomaki is taking a leap into the future," Kameyama told an opening ceremony.
Avant-garde artist Yayoi Kusama is among the artists participating in the event, which showcases a total of some 70 pieces of art.
Special restaurants are open to serve dishes using locally grown food ingredients.
Concerts will be held for three days from Friday, featuring popular musicians, such as Mr. Children. (Jiji Press)
