Fruit Fair Held in Taipei for Donation to Japan
July 22, 2018
Taipei- A dragon fruit fair took place in Taipei on Saturday to raise funds for a disaster relief donation to areas in western Japan severely affected by recent mudslides and floods.
A fruit farmer in Yilan County, northeastern Taiwan, put up 900 kilograms of organically grown dragon fruits, or some 65 pct of this year's harvest of the local specialty, for sale.
All proceeds, expected to total some 120,000 New Taiwan dollars, will be donated.
The farmer said Yilan is often hit by typhoons and floods and that he does not feel the disaster in Japan is someone else's problem.
The relief money will hopefully help affected people rebuild their lives as soon as possible, said an official at Taiwan's Council of Agriculture, which hosted the fair.
The Taiwanese government has already donated 20 million yen in disaster relief to Japan. Jiji Press
