Japanese Sculptor Nagare Dies at 95

Tokyo- Prominent Japanese sculptor Masayuki Nagare died of old age on July 7. He was 95.
Born in Nagasaki Prefecture, southwestern Japan, Nagare learned sculpture techniques on his own after returning from World War II and attained international recognition for the deep spirituality of his artworks.
His "Cloud Fortress," created in 1975 with some 250 tons of stones, was installed at the World Trade Center in New York. It survived the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks without a scratch, but was removed to facilitate rescue operations.
Nagare continued his work in Takamatsu, Kagawa Prefecture, and was awarded the design prize by the Architectural Institute of Japan and the Japan arts prize by the Shincho Foundation. Jiji Press
