Nissin to Use Biodegradable Plastics for Noodle Packages
August 26, 2018
Tokyo- Nissin Foods Holdings Co. plans to switch packaging materials for its instant noodle products to environment-friendly biodegradable plastics, its president and chief executive officer, Koki Ando, said Friday.
The shift "will be put into practice when costs fall," Ando told reporters in Tokyo, signaling the Japanese company's determination to eliminate chemical plastic waste in the future.
Nissin will raise the proportion of biodegradable plastics used in its instant noodle packages gradually, starting several years later, Ando said.
The company's efforts to review packaging materials have already led to a reduction of at least some 18 tons a year in the use of chemical plastics for three key instant noodle products.
An increasing number of companies overseas have been announcing plans to stop using plastic products to address ocean contamination from waste. Similar moves are gradually spreading in Japan. Jiji Press
