Store Name to Contain “Uny” for 1st Time in 9 Yrs

January 12, 2018

Tokyo- Outlets to be jointly run by comprehensive retailer Uny Co. and discount store operator Don Quijote Holdings Co. will be named "Mega Don Quijote Uny," FamilyMart Uny Holdings Co., Uny's parent, said Thursday.

It will be the first time in nine years for a store to contain the name of Uny.

A FamilyMart Uny official said the new name "represents the new stores operated by the reborn Uny." Uny had previously operated general merchandise stores and supermarkets with the company's name.

In hopes to shake up its image, the firm changed the names of all of its stores to Apita and Piago by 2009. Hit by a serious slump recently, Uny decided to enter into a business tie-up with Don Quijote.

FamilyMart Uny will transform a total of six Uny outlets in Aichi, Mie and Kanagawa prefectures into the jointly operated stores from February this year.

It is expecting sales of the six stores to increase 1.5 times after the switch over. Jiji Press
