Traditional adulthood ceremony
January 20, 2018
Tokyo- Students clad in special costumes head for a Shinto shrine at Kokugakuin University during a traditional adulthood ceremony in Tokyo on January 20, 2018.
Some 46 20-year-old students took part in the annual ceremony, which comes nearly two weeks after the country marked "Coming of Age Day" when those who turned 20 over the previous year or will do so before March 31 this year celebrated reaching adulthood.
The age a young person entered adulthood in Japan was set at 20 for both genders in 1876.
