Tsukiji Outer Market as Lively as Before: Tokyo Governor

December 20, 2018

Tokyo--Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike visited the popular shopping area next to the now-defunct Tsukiji fish market in the capital's Chuo Ward on Thursday, with a view to publicizing the area after the market's relocation.

"It's as lively as before," Koike said.

The number of tourists at the area, known as the outer market, is said to have fallen after the Tsukiji wholesale market was transferred in early October to the new market in Toyosu in neighboring Koto Ward.

Koike walked along the shopping street and sampled Japanese omelet sold at a store.

After the visit, referring to a plan to redevelop the Tsukiji market area slated to be compiled in fiscal 2019, Koike told reporters, "I want to make good use of this great location."

The outer market is lined with stores selling marine products and eateries offering dishes such as sushi and bowls of rice topped with sashimi.

In October, a new commercial facility called Tsukiji Uogashi fully opened in the area. Jiji Press
