100,000 jobs could be available for Filipino workers in Japan: POEA
September 11, 2017
One hundred thousand job opportunities in Japan could be available for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) said Sunday.
According to POEA officer-in-charge Bernard Olalia, they are expecting Japan as one of the emerging markets for OFWs.
"In Japan, they are opening markets for professionals, skilled, semi skilled workers," Olalia told reporters.
He said job openings will come as soon as Japan private institutions agree to hire OFWs.
"We are still drafting the Memorandum of Understanding between the Philippines and Japan. Once signed, we can start deploying professionals, and semi skilled workers," said Olalia.
The country is already deploying Filipino nurses and caregivers to Japan through the government-to-government deal known as Japan-Philippines Economic Partnership Agreement (JPEPA).
Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III said an emerging market like Japan could come in a handy considering the recent decision of US President Donald Trump to junk the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), which could affect some 10,000 OFWs there. DMS
