May 29, 2020

A total of 18 erring cops were arrested by the Philippine National Police- Integrity Monitoring and Enforcement Group (PNP-IMEG) since the start of the year, the PNP chief said on Friday.

In a virtual presser, Police General Archie Francisco Gamboa said from January 1 to May 28, the PNP-IMEG conducted a total of 43 successful operations which resulted in the arrest of 112 persons.

These were composed of six police commissioned officers (PCOs), 12 police non-commissioned officers (PNCOs), and 94 civilians.

“Operational accomplishment under the ECQ (enhanced community quarantine) from March 16, 2020 to May 28, 2020 resulted in a total of 23 successful operations resulting in the arrest of 61 persons, five PCOs, 11 PNCOs and 45 civilians,” Gamboa said.

Most of cops arrested by PNP-IMEG were involved in robbery and extortion.

On their campaign against illegal drugs, Gamboa said under his watch from October 14, 2019 to present, the PNP conducted 33,039 operations where 49,648 drug suspects were arrested, 2,857 personalities surrendered, a total of 812,474.36 kilos of shabu seized with a total value of P5.524 billion.

“This manifests the aggressive anti-illegal drugs posture of the PNP during this period,” Gamboa said.

“I commend the anti-illegal drug accomplishments of our operatives as our war on illegal drugs continues in its intensity together with our intensified war against the pandemic,” he added.

Under the “new normal” situation of the country, the PNP chief said they are now taking appropriate steps to adapt to the changing landscape and operating environment.

“Complementing the focus on public safety, law enforcement, and internal security functions will take the most part of police operations with greater attention to government flagship campaigns against crime, illegal drugs, and corruption,” he said.

“With more business and government processes becoming highly adaptable to technology, the PNP seeks to keep up with this trend by introducing innovations in systems and procedures in law enforcement methods,” Gamboa added.

He said they are now finishing their new protocols and operation procedures basically on observing health protocols.

“The end view is to lessen the possibility of transmission (of virus),” he said.

Gamboa said the new normal will require everybody’s continued cooperation, patience, and understanding.

“Reason and public interest shall be the paramount consideration in every human activity from hereon, at least, until such time when the world shall have completely eradicated the virus,” he added. Ella Dionisio/DMS
