2 Abu Sayyaf members killed in Basilan

Two members of Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) were killed in an encounter with Barangay Peacekeeping Action Team (BPAT) in Basilan on Thursday Capt. Jo-ann Petinglay, spokesperson of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Western Mindanao Command, said elements of the peacekeeping action team of Barangay Guinanta, Albarka, Basilan engaged the ASG members, led by Sarwin Kasaram, within the village around 12:50pm. She said the nearly two-hour firefight resulted to the death of two Abu Sayyaf members identified as Nasirin Awwalin and Hasmin Lajid. “Meanwhile, three members of the BPAT incurred wounds and were subsequently extricated for medical attention,” she said. Petinglay said Kasaram is a follower of ASG sub-leader Nurhassan Jamiri. Troops of the Joint Task Force Basilan continue to conduct checkpoints to thwart the extrication of the Abu Sayyaf Group members, she said. (Robina Asido/DMS)
