23 Filipinos die of coronavirus in Dubai
May 8, 2020
Some 23 Filipinos have died in Dubai due to the coronavirus disease, Philippine Consul-General Paul Raymund Cortes said Friday.
In the "Laging Handa" press briefing, Cortes said that as of Thursday, there were around 16,000 positive COVID-19 cases in United Arab Emirates.
"And around 23 of our citizens died of COVID-19 only in Dubai," he said.
He said the lockdown in Dubai has eased a little, however, still many of the Filipinos are experiencing "no work, no pay."
Cortes said the consulate in Dubai, in coordination with the Dubai Police, has been extending food assistance to the Filipinos who need help.
He also said that the Philippine Overseas Labor Office, Overseas Filipinos Workers Welfare Administration and other groups, such as the Emirates Red Crescent, have also been extending assistance.
Most of the workers who were displaced in Dubai came from hotel, restaurant and mall industries. Celerina Monte/DMS
