March 3, 2019

Six suspected Chinese members of a “loan shark” group were arrested for allegedly kidnapping their co-national in Calamba City, Laguna last Saturday.

Report from Laguna Police Provincial Office said the six Chinese were arrested in an operation after a concerned citizen reported that an alleged kidnapping was happening at Ridge Point Resort Purok 1, Brgy. Pansol in Calamba City.

“A call from a concerned citizen was received by the Laguna PPO, that they heard somebody inside the resort asking for help,” police said.

After receiving the report, the intelligence operatives went to the said resort to conduct a surveillance and casing for validation.

At around 11pm, a follow up operation was conducted after positive validation which resulted to the arrest of the suspects and rescue of the kidnap victim named Edison Yen, 30, who was allegedly held for four days.

Suspects were identified as Xin Wang, 30; Sun Qing Ji, 26; Hong Zhong Ah, 38; Yang Ben, 24; Zhao Da Hai, 40; and Si Cuan, 42, all from China and currently residing in Pasay City.

The group’s mode of operation was to offer Chinese tourist money to be used in playing at casino.

When the victim win, they would get the money but if he loses, they would force him to pay the borrowed money with interest. If the person fails to pay, the group would kidnap him and ask money from his relatives abroad for his release.

While the group allegedly already victimized several people, no one has filed a complaint for fear that the suspects would go after them.

Kidnapping charges would be filed against the Chinese group. Ella Dionisio/DMS
