December 22, 2020

Sixty-six persons died from coronavirus disease (COVID-19), the most this month, as deaths from COVID-19 surpassed 9,000 since quarantine began in March.

Total fatalities are at 9,021. New COVID-19 cases were reported at 1, 314 which brought total cases to 462, 815.

Quezon City topped the list of new cases for the fifth time in a week with 93 followed by Rizal Province with 89. Benguet came in third with 78, Bulacan 61 and Davao City 60.

There were 247 persons who bounced back from COVID-19, bringing total recoveries to 462, 815.

OCTA Research said nine out 17 local government units in NCR showed an increase in new cases, namely Quezon City, Makati, San Juan, Marikina, Malabon, Taguig, Navotas, Valenzuela, and Caloocan.

"The rise in new cases in the NCR over the last week is the highest for the last two months," said OCTA.

Last week, Health Secretary Francisco Duque III said the surge in COVID-19 cases in Metro Manila is already showing ahead of the Christmas and New Year’s Day celebrations.

The OCTA team said the NCR situation can still be mitigated or even reversed.

"While the situation in the NCR is still manageable, we exhort the government, civil society, and the private sector to start working together to implement appropriate and timely responses to reverse this trend quickly and to prevent this ensuing surge from becoming full-blown and potentially overwhelming the health care system in the NCR," it said.
