85% of Filipinos worried family members may get COVID-19:SWS

July 23, 2020

Eighty five percent of Filipinos were found to be worried that anyone in their immediate family might contract the coronavirus disease (COVID-19), according to Social Weather Stations (SWS).

In its latest survey released on Wednesday, SWS said 85 percent of Filipinos are worried of being infected by the virus while eight percent were a little worried and seven percent were not worried at all.

“This hardly changed from the 87 percent worried about catching the virus in May 2020,” it said.

SWS said more Filipinos are worried of catching the COVID-19 virus  than ebola, swine flu, bird flu, and severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS).

It said 92 percent response came from Metro Manila, 87 percent from Balance Luzon, 85 percent in Visayas and 85 percent in Mindanao.

“Compared to May 2020, worry about catching the virus stayed at 92 percent in Metro Manila, while it rose slightly from 85 percent in Balance Luzon. However, it declined from 91 percent in the Visayas, and from 85 percent in Mindanao,” the survey said.

SWS said more women were worried about catching the virus from 86 to 87 percent while it declined slightly at men from 87 to 83 percent.

Eighty-eight percent of persons aged 18 to 24 were more worried about contracting COVID-19.

According to the survey, Filipinos have always been more worried than Americans about catching the virus.

“The ABC News/Washington Post May 25-28, 2020 survey found that 63 percent of Americans were concerned that they or someone in their immediate family might catch the COVID-19,” it said.

The latest SWS survey was conducted on July 3 to 6 using mobile phone and computer-assisted telephone interviewing (CATI) of 1,555 adult Filipinos nationwide. Ella Dionsio/DMS
