Abu Sayyaf killed, 34 captured in Sulu

A member of the Abu Sayyaf was killed while 34 were captured in a law enforcement operation in Sulu on early Wednesday. Chief Supt. Reuben Theodore Sindac, Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao police director, said military and police were conducting law enforcement operation on an anti-drug campaign when they were fired upon by armed group members believed to be drug personalities affiliated or members of the Abu Sayyaf at the vicinity of Brgy Danag, Patikul, Sulu around 4 am. Sindac said the operation has resulted in the killing of an Abu Sayyaf identified as Jah Addul and the arrest of 34 suspected drug personalities believed to be affiliated with the ASG were arrested. He said the arrested suspects were being processed for verification and proper identification. Brig. Gen. Cirilito Sobejana, Joint Task Force Sulu commander, said the arrested suspects include one female and 33 males. He said the military suspects the female suspect is the illegal drug pusher. Sindac said one soldier identified as Corporal Jeffrey Maramag of 45th Infantry Battalion was wounded. “Wounded trooper was immediately brought to Camp Bautista Hospital (for medical treatment),” he said. Government troops also seized one M16, three calibre 45, drug paraphernalia’s, three large heat sealed sachet believed to be “shabu” and five grenades. (Robina Asido/DMS)
