AFP denies allegations of attacks vs indigenous people communities

September 4, 2020

The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) denied the allegations of the Indigenous Peoples’ Rights International that the military attacked indigenous people communities.

"We take exception to that sweeping statement by some quarters (Indigenous Peoples’ Rights International) who may have been fed false or fabricated information. We have been in IP communities responding to their calls for help or assistance," Major General Edgard Arevalo, AFP spokesman said on Friday.

"The recent baseless charges against the Army personnel from 7ID who operated in Zambales turned out to be hearsay, unfounded claims, and lies," he said.

A news report said soldiers of the 7th Infantry Division allegedly abused Zambales Aetas.

Arevalo said among those apprehended during the operations were communist terrorist group members belonging to the same IP community who perpetrated the accusations of human rights violations.

''Even the alleged bombing of Aeta communities by military personnel was belied by their chieftain Marcelo Galado," he added.

Arevalo encouraged the complaining group to substantiate their claims.

"Nonetheless, should they have any complaints, we encourage them to report the same to AFP units with documents or testimonies to substantiate the allegations of abuse and we will take appropriate actions," he said.

"We do not tolerate in our ranks transgressions of peoples’ rights. As a matter of fact, we are protectors of human rights especially of IPs who often fall victims of abuse and exploitations by CTG and blame the AFP for it," he added. Robina Asido/DMS
