June 28, 2018
Stricter background checks on new recruits were ordered by Philippine National Police (PNP) Director General Oscar Albayalde after three rookie cops in Manila were arrested due to alleged extortion.
“That's one of my directives, to intensify our background investigation even before a person enters the police service,” he said in an interview over dzMM Thursday.
The three policemen were caught in an entrapment operation for an alleged extortion attempt from violators of city ordinances.
The cops, with the rank of Police Officer 1 from the Ermita Police Station 5 was said to have asked P300,000 from their victims which eventually went down by P50,000.
Albayalde said they would require an extensive background check of all applicants.
“I think there is a still a problem in recruitment,” he said. Albayalde said the police officer who conducted the background check will be held responsible if a recruit turns out to be a scalawag. DMS
