An alleged member of the Abu Sayyaf died in a shootout operatives of the Philippine National Police- Anti-Kidnapping Group (PNP-AKG) early Wednesday morning.
Brig. General Jonel Estomo, AKG director, said police were serving a warrant of arrest against Jupuri Dais around 2am in Barangay Poblacion, Sibuco, Zamboanga Del Norte for kidnapping and serious illegal detention.
Estomo said Dais fired at the police team, triggering a shootout where Dais died.
Based on police records, Dais is a member of an Abu Sayyaf sub-unit under Almujir Yadah. Dais was also a former member of Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).
Estomo said the death of Dais thwarted a possible kidnapping as the suspect was in Sibuco to abduct a certain Zamboanga-based project engineer and contractor.
Estomo said Dais is being sought by the AKG for his alleged involvement in a series of kidnapping incidents in Mindanao since 2016. Ella Dionisio/DMS
