An alleged member of Abu Sayyaf was killed while another one was wounded in an encounter in Sulu on Monday.
Lt Col. Ralf De Mesa, Joint Task Force Sulu acting spokesman, said the troops of Philippine Marine Ready Force Sulu (PMRFS) Marine Battalion Landing Team 3 encountered the Abu Sayyaf members in Simusa Island, municipality of Banguingui around 11:44 am.
“The firefight happened after members of the Abu Sayyaf tried to get to a potable water source in the Island,” he said.
“The captured Abu Sayyaf was immediately given first aid and was subsequently evacuated via helicopter to Kuta Heneral Teodulfo Bautista Station Hospital for further treatment,” he said.
De Mesa said Brig. Gen. Divino Rey Pabayo Jr., JTF Sulu commander, reiterated his appreciation for the support by citizens.
“The people of Simusa Island will soon be able to live in peace,” said Pabayo.
De Mesa said Pabayo “further praised the gallantry and perseverance of the Philippine Marines who are continuously doing their duty to ensure peace in the area.” Robina Asido/DMS
