December 11, 2019

An alleged member of New People’s Army (NPA) was killed and a soldier was wounded in an encounter in Misamis Oriental on Tuesday.

Brig. Gen. Edgardo De Leon. commander of the 403rd Brigade, said troops raided the armed men at the forested hideout Brgy. Banglay, Lagonglong in Mt. Obulan of Misamis Oriental around 5 pm.

Lt. Col. Ezra Balagtey, spokesman of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Eastern Mindanao Command, said the clash between the troops and around 15 armed men lasted for about 30 minutes.

Balagtey said the troops were conducting security patrol in response to the reported consolidation of armed men in the area.

He said reports from the community said that the rebels "were planning to conduct atrocities in an undetermined place and target."

Following the clash, troops recovered a body with two M-653 rifles, one M-16 rifle, one AK-47 assault rifle, one Garand rifle and one caliber .22 rifle.

De Leon said one of the assaulting team members was slightly wounded in the forearm.

“The wounded soldier refused to be evacuated as he was just slightly grazed by bullet in his right arm. They are still on pursuit operation as of this report,” he said.

De Leon said the military believes some of the armed men were injured by gunshot wound or by jumping into the ravine. Robina Asido/DMS
