Alleged rapist of young girl, grabs cop’s gun and shoots self: PNP

A man who allegedly raped an eight-year-old girl snatched a gun of a policeman and shot himself to death on his way to the detention cell on Tuesday night, the head of the Philippine National Police Anti-kidnapping Group said. Senior Superintendent Glenn Dumlao said Wednesday Larry Herrera was charged kidnapping with rape and homicide of a girl in Nueva Ecija. The body of the victim was found on July 24 in a field in Jaen after disappearing on July 19, reports said. The victim is the daughter of the family who took care of Herrera after he was released on parole from Iwahig in Palawan on March 27, 2014 after spending 10 years there, Dumlao said. Herrera, whose hands were handcuffed in front, grabbed the gun of one of the two policemen guarding him after they get off the vehicle, said Dumlao. . He said Herrera was rushed to the Philippine National Police General Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival. Dumlao said Herrera was quiet since he was detained on Saturday and Sunday. "During the period of your detention you will be really imbalanced. You do not get to sleep. ", Dumlao said. "I think one of the reasons that pushed him is as far as we know, he knows that if your case is rape and you are returned there, you will be killed", Dumlao said. He said another reason is because Herrera felt remorseful since the victim is the daughter of the family who took care of him after being released. The Philippine National Police conducted a paraffin test to the two cops escorting Herrera. They surrendered their firearms and Internal Affairs Service will investigate, Dumlao said.
