Almost 130,000 lost jobs: DOLE report

Nearly 130,000 workers have lost their jobs after over 5,000 companies permanently closed or implemented retrenchment due to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic.

Based on a report of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), a total of 5,672 companies had displaced workers totaling to 127,962, as of July 19.

"A total of 127,962 workers were displaced nationwide from 5,672 establishments from January 2020 to present as reported by the DOLE regional offices, with 90 percent of which reduced workforce (5,100), while the remaining 10 percent reported permanent closure (572)," said the DOLE report.

The report said  572 firms that reported permanent closure resulted in the loss of jobs for 11,875 workers.

It added 5,100 companies that retrenched workers and affected 116,087 employees.

In July alone, a total of 23,244 employees from 1,690 firms lost their jobs.

June tallied the highest number of reporting establishments with 2,602, which meant 50,589 workers were displaced.

The National Capital Region (NCR) had the most number of displaced workers with 52,814; followed by Calabarzon with 31,254.

Also with a high number of displaced workers are Central Luzon (15,524); Central Visayas (6,747); Cordillera Administrative Region (5,345); and Davao Region (3,906).

In terms of major industry group, having the most displaced workers were under administrative and support service (32,092); followed by other service activities (19,408); and the manufacturing sector (17,787).

Also suffering  job losses are accommodation and food service industry (10,196); wholesale and retail trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (9,652); financial and insurance activities (6,036); and information and communication (6,017). DMS
