Año advises PNP chief aspirants to show “true selves,” not to rely on PRs

Interior and Local Government Secretary Eduardo Año on Sunday told the police officers who are candidates to be the next chief of the Philippine National Police that President Rodrigo Duterte is listening more from the feedback of the people and not on what is being shown through media releases.
Assigned to handle the PNP while Duterte has yet to find an “honest man”, Año said this is the time for the aspirants to show their true selves by providing better service to the Filipinos.
“I think he (Duterte) will choose as soon as possible because he already has candidates. He cannot just decide because he is still studying and mastering the performance of these senior police officers,” he said.
“And if I were the these candidates, this is the time to make themselves better, work hard and show your true selves,” he added.
Late last year, Duterte assigned Año to “handle” and “fix” the PNP while he has yet to decide who would lead the agency.
Former PNP chief, Police General Oscar Albayalde stepped down from his post until his retirement last November after allegations that he was a protector of policemen who got involved in illegal drugs in 2013. Albayalde denied the allegations.
The candidates to be the next PNP chief are its current officer-in-charge Police Lieutenant General Archie Francisco Gamboa; deputy chief for operations Police Lieutenant General Camilo Pancratius Cascolan; and chief of directorial staff Police Lieutenant General Guillermo Lorenzo Eleazar.
