The Philippine Army (PA) welcomes the filing of murder cases against the suspects on killing a retired soldier in Quezon City last April.

On Thursday,  the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) reported filed murder, perjury and planting of evidence complaint against the suspects.

"We welcome the filing of murder cases against PMSgt. Daniel Florendo and four other police trainees in the killing of former Corporal Winston Ragos," the Philippine Army said in a statement issued on Friday.

"Through this, we hope that we can at least honor his sacrifices to the nation he served, and raise awareness on the mental health issues our soldiers face," it added.

Lt. General Gilbert Gapay, Army commanding general, said the development is a major step in their quest of justice for Ragos and his family.

“The NBI’s filing of murder cases against PMSgt. Daniel Florendo, and four other police trainees, in connection with the killing of former Corporal Winston Ragos, is a major step towards justice for our fallen hero, who has given the best years of his life in service to the country," said Gapay.

Ragos, a former Army soldier suffering from post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), was shot dead by a policeman at a checkpoint on April 21 at Barangay Pasong Putik, Quezon City.

Following his death, Gapay requested the NBI to look into the incident.

Gapay said "the Army strongly believes that truth will prevail, and expects indictment on all the cases filed."

"May this initial development bring comfort to his family, and continue to raise awareness on mental health, and the plight of our soldiers who bear invisible scars," he added. Robina Asido/DMS
