Arroyo says law banning political dynasties can stop relatives seeking seats
October 26, 2018
Speaker Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo said only a law banning political dynasty would prevent “family affairs” governance in various elective posts.
“Well until there is law that defines a political dynasty, that's where we can do something so this law can be followed,” Arroyo told reporters in an ambush interview yesterday during an inspection of retaining wall project in Sasmuan, Pampanga.
“Well like any political activity, there are good and bad sides. Like any issue, there is nothing totally good or totally bad,” Arroyo added when asked if political dynasty is good.
Earlier, lawmakers said criticisms the family of President Rodrigo Duterte have been building a political dynasty should be left to the voters.
Lawmakers said voters usually select their leaders because of a brand of public service they have been showing.
Past and present Congresses saw the presence of family members serving at the same time, like former Senators Loi Estrada and Jinggoy Estrada, and siblings.
During the 15th Congress, former Deputy Speaker and Cebu Rep. Pablo Garcia and son, former Cebu Rep. Pablo John Garcia were elected.
Earlier, resigned Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano said there is nothing illegal with him and his wife, incumbent Taguig City Mayor Lani Cayetano running for seats in Taguig City in the House of Representatives. DMS
