ASEAN foreign ministers extend plan of action to implement nuclear free zone treaty

Foreign ministers of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) extended the implementation of a plan of action of the nuclear free zone treaty for five more years.
In a statement by the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Saturday, it said the extension until 2022 was decided on August 4.
The decision was made in a meeting of the Southeast Asia Nuclear Weapon-Free Zone Commission, chaired by Philippine Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano.
"In his intervention, Secretary Cayetano underscored the Philippines’ support for the full implementation of the SEANWFZ Treaty, consistent with the region’s goal of preserving the region as a Nuclear Weapon-Free Zone and ensuring the safety of the peoples of ASEAN," the DFA statement said.
The commission is composed of ASEAN.foreign ministers who are tasked with overseeing implementation of the Southeast Asia Nuclear Weapon-Free Zone Treaty. DMS
