BFAR to support fisherfolks after reports Chinese Coast Guard illegally confiscated FADs
August 21, 2020
The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) said it will provide support to fisherfolks following reports that the Chinese Coast Guard illegally confiscated fish aggregating devices (FADs) of Filipino fishermen in Bajo de Masinloc in May.
"While the matter is being handled by the DFA through appropriate channels, the Department of Agriculture’s Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DA-BFAR) will continue to ensure that necessary support is given to our fisherfolk through provision of livelihood interventions," the BFAR said in a statement issued on Friday.
"The Bureau will also continue implementing programs like the Malinis at Masaganang Karagatan aimed at strengthening the commitment of local government units in the protection of marine environment, especially in municipal waters and other traditional fishing grounds, where critical marine habitats are located, and where fish reproduce and grow," it added.
On August 20, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) lodged a diplomatic protest against China after the Chinese Coast Guard illegally confiscated the fish aggregating devices of Filipino fishermen in Bajo De Masinloc.
According to DA-BFAR "FAD ( fish aggregating devices), locally known as payaos, consist of a floating raft anchored by weighted line with suspended materials such as palm fronds."
"These are deployed in strategic areas to attract pelagic and schooling species common in deep waters," it added.
The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said they reported the incident comes but added only the DFA that is allow to discuss or answer questions about the issue. Robina Asido/DMS
