May 29, 2020
The mayor of Bocaue, Bulacan died due to sepsis secondary to bacterial pneumonia, Jesus is Lord (JIL) Church said Thursday.
In a statement, JIL said Bocaue Mayor Joni Villanueva Tugna expired around 5:08 pm at a hospital in Taguig City.
Joni is the sister of Senator Joel Villanueva and JIL’s executive director.
"As mayor of Bocaue, Bulacan, she was also a pioneer and trailblazer: innovative in her methods and humane in her actions. In fact, even as she was sick, she was working and serving and caring for her constituents—involved even in the packing and distribution of relief goods until her body stopped her to do so,” the organization said.
“That is why our hearts are grieving that today, at 5:08pm, our dear Mayor Joni, because of sepsis secondary to bacterial pneumonia, has left this world and has come home to her Father in heaven,” it added.
In a separate statement, Senator Joel Villanueva said his sister has been “relentlessly serving Bocaueños during this lockdown despite her medical condition which eventually caused her life”.
“She’s more than a public servant to me, she’s my role model. Will terribly miss her,” he added. Ella Dionisio/DMS
