October 1, 2018

BRP Tarlac with 440 personnel docked at a Russian naval facility in Vladivostok before noon Monday, the first port visit by a Philippine Navy ship to Russia, a Navy spokesman said.

"They have arrived at the Russian Pacific Fleet Base  (in Vladivostok) this morning," said Commander  Jonathan Zata.

Zata said BRP Tarlac entered the Russian waters on Sunday afternoon and welcomed a Russian anti-submarine ship Sovetskaya Gavan. The ship escorted BRP Tarlac to Vladivostok.

"We are very much excited in this historic event since this is the first time that a Philippine Navy commissioned vessel is able to visit Vladivostok," said Zata.

"This is made possible through the commander in chief's efforts to modernizing your navy as well as the support from all stakeholders in seeing a stronger and more credible maritime organization," added Zata.

The Navy ship will be on a port visit in Vladisvostok until Oct. 6. Then, the ship and crew will proceed to Jeju, South Korea for the International Fleet Review from October 10 to 15.

The Philippine contingent will be engaged in various activities, including a visit of the headquarters of the Russian Pacific Fleet and a Russian submarine manufacturing facility.

"Sea exercises will likewise be undertaken after conclusion of the port visit.  The activity conveys the Command’s commitment in promoting multilateral cooperation," Zata said. DMS
