CBCP official says Marcoses should not put conditions in returning alleged wealth to gov’t
September 4, 2017
An official of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) who was a former martial law victim, said Monday the reported offer by the Marcos family to return part of their alleged hidden wealth should not have any conditions.
In an interview, CBCP - Basic Ecclesial Communities Committee Executive Secretary Fr. Amado Picardal said: "It's a clear admission that they stashed billions, which belongs to the Filipino people. They should return all that they looted from us without precondition."
Picardal if they do this the Marcos family would be able to sincerely express their apologies over the abuses Filipinos underwent.
"That would be an expression of remorse for what happened under martial law," said Picardal.
Over the weekend, President Rodrigo Duterte said he spoken to the Marcoses.
Asked if he believes if a deal will be struck between Duterte and the Marcos family, Picardal said: "I don't want to speculate. They might want to keep a percentage (of the wealth). After all, they supported Duterte's candidacy financially." DMS
