A total of 142 passengers were rescued by the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) after a passenger-cargo vessel encountered engine trouble at waters off Caticlan anchorage in Malay, Aklan Monday.
Investigation revealed that MV Super Shuttle Ferry 18 departed from Roxas, Mindoro around 3AM on the same date with passengers and 7 rolling cargoes onboard. While underway to Caticlan Jetty Port, the vessel experienced engine trouble.
The PCG launched a joint rescue team composed of personnel from Coast Guard Station (CGS) Aklan, Coast Guard Sub-Station Boracay and Special Operations Force.
The PCG's multi-role response vessel, BRP Cape Engaño and its fast patrol boat from France, BRP Boracay were sent to render assistance.
About 135 adults, four children and three infants were safely disembarked at said port in Barangay Caticlan. All passengers were in good condition.
The Aklan Coast Guard Station told the master of the vessel to file a marine protest and secure a certificate of seaworthiness from the Maritime Industry Authority prior to resuming service. DMS
