Comelec sees seven million new voters in 2022 polls
August 26, 2020
As much as seven million Filipinos are projected to be included in the roster of registered voters in the May 2022 national and local elections.
This is according to Commission on Elections (Comelec) spokesman James Jimenez, who said they expect a good reception as voter registration resumes on September 1.
"We are looking at four to seven million actually coming in to register before the end of this period," said Jimenez in an online conference on late Tuesday.
Of the seven million, Jimenez said some four million are believed to be new voters, or those who just turned 18 years old.
"These are the kids, who have just turned 18 or will be turning 18 in time for the 2022 elections," said Jimenez.
"We actually lost about four months of registration because we had to shutdown our offices when the whole quarantine started. So we are playing catch up," said Jimenez.
The COMELEC announced the resumption of voter registration on September 1 nationwide, except in areas still under Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ) or Modified ECQ (MECQ).
Applications for registration may be submitted from Tuesday to Saturday, from 8 am to 3 pm, at the Office of the Election Officer of the city/municipality.
There are 61,843,771 registered voters nationwide, based on Comelec data. DMS
