Cop, LGU staff hurt in NPA attack in Masbate

A policeman and a local government employee in Moreal, Masbate were injured following an attack allegedly perpetrated by the communist New People's Army (NPA).

In a statement, Monreal Municipal Police Station (MPS) condemned the NPA attack, which took place in Barangay Rizal last April 24.

According to the authorities, the a team of policemen was assisting and securing the members of the local government unit in giving financial assistance to the people when the rebels launched an attack.

“But the NPA just showed their barbaric way in causing fear to the people. This is an act of desperate people whose purpose is to sow fear,” Monreal MPS said.

Based on the initial report, the incident transpired around 1:30pm after the group just finished distributing social amelioration fund to the residents affected by the coronavirus disease crisis.

Victims, Police Corporal Romel Bartolay and Ricky Canares, were immediately brought to the Rural Health Unit for medical treatment.

To help the police in providing security, the Army's 2nd Infantry Battalion sent troops in the area.

Last April 16, a police officer was also wounded in Libon, Albay following an attack by an unidentified group after providing aid to the local government staff who distributed cash assistance to the residents of Barangay Malosbolos. Ella Dionisio/DMS
