Cop, suspect killed in encounter with five armed men in Misamis Oriental

A police officer was killed while another was injured in an encounter with around five armed men in Libertad, Misamis Oriental last Monday night.

The Misamis Oriental provincial police said slain cop was Police Staff Sergeant Ronald Caayupan while wounded cop Police Chief Master Sergeant Fernando Maestrado. Also killed was one of the suspects, Jephone Tinamisan, 33.

Initial investigation said the Libertad Municipal Police Station were conducting checkpoint around 8:30 pm at the national highway in Poblacion when five unidentified suspects on board a vehicle fired at them.

Authorities recovered four cal. 45 pistol, two  KG 9, one 9mm pistol, four hand grenades, and five plastic sachets containing suspected shabu.

On Tuesday morning, the hot pursuit operation by the Misamis police led to the arrest of one suspect named as Richard Son Perez, 31, who is now under the custody of the Libertad police for filing of appropriate charges.

Police Colonel Robert Roy Bahian, Misamis provincial director, visited the wake of Caayupan and handed financial assistance to his wife.

Operation is still ongoing to arrest the remaining suspects. Ella Dionisio/DMS
