COVID-19 deaths breach 1,000 mark

The number of patients who succumbed to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has breached the 1,000 mark, the Department of Health (DOH) reported on Sunday.
In its latest bulletin, DOH said nine new fatalities were recorded, bringing the total to 1,003 deaths from the 21, 895 total COVID-19 cases.
Out of the 21,895 cases, there were 555 new cases reported. Broken down, 378 were fresh cases which are results released to patients within the last three days. Late cases, or results released to patients four days ago or more, reached 177.
Eighty-nine patients survived COVID-19, bringing the number of recoveries to 4, 530.
Of the fresh cases, Metro Manila has recorded 67 while Central Visayas has 104; while other regions have 204 cases and three were repatriates.
Of the late cases, Metro Manila has 25, Central Visayas has 63 while other regions reported 89 cases.
The DOH said of the 15, 905 active cases, 95.1 percent or 15, 131 were mild cases, 698 were asymptomatic, 57 were severe and 19 were critical.
In terms of hospital bed and mechanical ventilators, the country has a total of 13,463 bed capacity for COVID-19 patients while 1,983 ventilators have been used.
As of June 6, there were 41 testing facilities in the country.
For the temporary treatment and monitoring facilities, DOH said the Ligtas COVID facilities have a total of 46,027 bed capacity while the Mega Ligtas COVID facilities can accommodate 3,190 individuals.
Local COVID centers are community-managed local isolation and general treatment areas for COVID-19 cases dedicated for quarantine or isolation of suspected COVID-19 cases while the Mega Ligtas COVID facilities are managed by the national government.
Meanwhile, Malacanang reminded the public to exercise all the precautions advised by health authorities during their travel after some OFWs tested positive upon their arrival to their hometowns.
“COVID-19 testing reflects the person's health status only at the time of testing. Between the time a test is conducted and the time of arrival of an OFW or anyone travelling, the possibility of infection remains,” Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said in a statement.
“Having said this, we remind everyone to exercise all the precautions advised by health authorities during travel. Additional safety measures at the provincial or LGU level are likewise necessary to ensure that one is truly healthy and devoid of COVID-19,” he added.
The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) reported 24 new confirmed COVID-19 cases in Europe and Middle East among Filipinos abroad, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 5,392.
As of Sunday, six are new recoveries in Asia and the Pacific and Middle East while seven new fatalities were recorded in the Middle East as well.
“The DFA also confirms that a previously confirmed case in Europe turned out to be negative for COVID,” it said.
Based on its record, of the total infected Filipinos in 49 countries, 2, 791 patients have been undergoing treatment; 2,231 recovered, while 370 died.
A total of 215 countries and territories around the world have been already infected by the virus.
