De Lima gets Liberal International award
July 26, 2018
Senator Leila de Lima will receive the “Prize for Freedom” Award from the Liberal International (LI) in recognition for her efforts in defense of freedom and human rights, her office said in a statement on Thursday.
De Lima will be given the award at Novotel Manila, Araneta Center, Quezon City on July 28.
“A vocal critic of President Rodrigo Duterte’s so-called ‘war on drugs’ and a prisoner of conscience. [Sen.] de Lima was one of the first to be targeted by the hard-line Duterte government for her outspoken criticism of the president’s targeted campaign of violence, which has left thousands of mostly poor Filipinos dead,” LI said in a release.
“Imprisoned since February 2017, this month Liberal International will recognise her sacrifice with our highest human rights award, the Prize for Freedom,” it added.
Then President Corazon Aquino was the first Filipino to win the award in 1987. DMS
