Defense department to acquire South Korean corvette
April 27, 2017
The defense department is set to acquire a Pohang-class Flight III anti-submarine corvette from South Korea for only $100, a spokesman said Thursday. “We have sent a letter to the government of South Korea expressing our intent to acquire one Pohang class corvette,” said Arsenio Andolong, public affairs chief of the defense department. He expressed hope it will be transported to Philippines within this year. Andolong said the transfer of the vessel to Philippines “will be in the form of a donation.” “However, we will pay a token fee of $100,” he said. “The corvette will still undergo refurbishment, the cost of which we will shoulder,” he said. Andolong could say how much it would cost to refurbish the vessel but he emphasized its importance especially for the Philippine Navy. “It will definitely enhance our capability to patrol our waters and perform counter terrorism missions,” he added.
