DOH denies it ordered Metro Manila hospital to stop counting COVID-19 deaths

April 11, 2020

The Department of Health (DOH) on Saturday debunked a report that allegedly they ordered a hospital in Metro Manila to stop counting coronavirus disease (COVID-19) deaths.

“We would like to clarify that DOH has never issued any order to stop the census or reporting of deaths, or any case related to COVID-19 to any health facility. All hospitals and health centers are mandated to report on consultation and/ or admissions and the status thereof, that fit the COVID-19 case definitions,” it said in a statement.

DOH said the alleged report came from an Instagram post of a media practitioner which was screenshot and circulated on social media. The health department said they spoke to the person regarding the matter.

It is investigating the person's allegations.

“We will provide updates as soon as we can,” it said.

Meanwhile, on the issue of burying COVID-19 fatalities, DOH said they are coordinating with the Department of Interior and Local Government as well as local government units to ensure guidelines are followed.

“Pasig City and Quezon City have already designated crematoriums to address this matter; we encourage other local government units to do the same,” DOH said.

DOH urged the public to exercise discretion when sharing information.

“Fact-check and verify first through DOH’s official channels and legitimate sources,” it said.

“We are committed to providing the public with verified, evidence-based information,” it added.

As of 4pm, DOH said it recorded 4,428 COVID-19 cases with 247 deaths and 157 recoveries. Ella Dionisio/DMS
