The Department of Health (DOH) Monday warned of possible health risks brought by placing "white sand" or crushed dolomites on the shores of Manila Bay to those who would visit.
In a virtual press briefing, Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said: "Based on studies, when we are able to inhale dolomites, there are possible adverse reactions, mainly respiratory. Because once we inhale it, the ones affected is the respiratory system."
"Based on medical literature, dolomite dusts or once it is aerosolized in the air, can cause respiratory issues to a person," she said.
Vergeire said dolomite dusts may cause eye irritation.
"With the clearance of the DENR ( Department of Environment and Natural Resources), it will not be implemented if it did not undergo thorough studies if it will cause harm to the environment and also to our people," said Vergeire.
"We are not saying that once you visit Manila Bay, you'll sure to get it," added Vergeire.
Vergeire said it would be good to continue wearing face masks when you go to Manila Bay.
"When you go to the Manila Bay for your R&R (rest and recreation), let us still observe minimum health standards. When you're wearing your face masks, inhalation can be prevented also," said Vergeire. DMS
